چکیده

The extracellular matrix of structured microbial communities constitutes the framework that holds the component cells together. Although the presence of cell-to-cell interconnecting matrices appears to be a common feature of structured microbial communities, there is a remarkable diversity in the composition of these matrices. Compounds such as polysaccharides, fimbriae, mating pili, and extracellular DNA can all function as extracellular matrix components. In the present chapter we provide examples of the diversity of

Efficient Optimal Multi-level Thresholding for Biofilm Image Segmentation

A microbial biofilm is structured mainly by a protective sticky matrix of extracellular polymeric substances. The appreciation of such structures is useful for the microbiologist and can be subjective to the observer. Thus, quantifying the underlying images in useful parameters by means of an objective image segmentation process helps substantially to reduce errors in quantification. This paper...

Matrix exopolysaccharides; the sticky side of biofilm formation

The Gram-negative pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa is found ubiquitously within the environment and is recognised as an opportunistic human pathogen that commonly infects burn wounds and immunocompromised individuals, or patients suffering from the autosomal recessive disorder cystic fibrosis (CF). During chronic infection, P. aeruginosa is thought to form structured aggregates known as biofilms...

A Threat to Food Safety BIOFILMS

What is causing the sticky film on that melon? Or the dull varnish of that apple? Might it be a layer of gooey goodness akin to that of a glazed donut? Not likely, but it could be a biofilm. A biofilm is a thin layer of densely packed microorganisms encapsulated within an aqueous matrix of proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides. Microbes in biofilms tend to flourish on moist surfaces, agg...

Biofilm exopolysaccharides: a strong and sticky framework.

Biofilms probably comprise the normal environment for most microbial cells in many natural and artificial habitats, and as such are complex associations of cells, extracellular products and detritus either trapped within the biofilm or released from cells which have lysed as the biofilm ages (Christensen, 1989). The main ‘cement ’ for all these cells and products is the mixture of polysaccharid...

Biofilm Formation in Staphylococcus Aureus and its Relation to Phenotypic and Genotypic Criteria

Abstract Background and Objective: Biofilm is a complex microbial community embedded in a self-produced extracellular polymeric matrix. We aimed to study the extent of biofilm formation by S. Areas isolates and its relation to some phenotypic and genotypic criteria. Material and Methods: One hundred-fifty strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from Gorgan were studied. Microtiter plate a...
